Job Description

  • managing the Groups’s IP issues in specific regions/for Global Drive Brands
  • developing the relationship between the central IP COSE and the regions/end markets/IBGs and Brand Owners
  • maximising the use of the IP central services by the regions/central teams
  • working effectively with internal IP central services teams and external counsel/agents to deliver effectively and efficiently to stakeholders
  • ensuring the protection as well as enforcement and exploitation of the Group’s brands is in compliance with Group strategy/guidelines/policies.
  • Deputy Manager has direct responsibility for the following: 


A successful Deputy Manager will demonstrate:

Essential requirements 

Preferably qualified to Trade mark attorney/solicitor level (with IP specialism) and is expected to demonstrate the following: 

  • Experience in international trademark and intellectual property law with appropriate legal and/or intellectual property qualifications
  • Knowledge of tobacco industry
  • Fluent in English
  • Good commercial judgement and clear understanding of BAT business (organisational and operational) and markets with ability to understand and support the strategic aims of the business
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including an ability to translate complex IP strategies into easily understandable terms and to communicate these effectively both orally and in writing with all levels of management
  • Drafting skills for commercial agreements, licences, assignments etc with considerable attention to detail and accuracy
  • Detailed and practical working knowledge of IP laws including trademark, copyright, competition, contract, commercial and data protection with aspiration to improve such knowledge
  • Management and leadership ability to advise, train and develop professional staff
  • High degree of self-motivation and the ability to achieve defined and measurable results
  • Ability to work under pressure and to cope with unexpected and varied demands
  • Ability to utilise internal teams to commission and execute work
  • Prepared to travel, often at short notice
  • Relevant experience in international and intellectual property law with appropriate legal and/or intellectual property qualifications
  • Sound working knowledge of the principles and practice of global IP laws and practice, including trade mark application procedures for all territories within area of responsibility with aspiration to improve such knowledge and gain country specific knowledge in these areas
  • Sound knowledge of the principles underlying trade mark law and passing off and understanding of variance in practice of international trade mark laws with ability to determine how to apply the same to varying situations
  • Good interpersonal skills including an ability to translate complex trademark issues into easily understandable terms and to communicate these effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with internal group customers to promote the effective use of the central services teams
  • Advanced computer literacy
  • Advanced knowledge of all aspects of BATMark’s Information Management System - Anaqua
  • Experience in developing and embedding standard processes to drive resource efficiecies
  • Ability to prioritise workload and work flow for a team (without directly line managing the team(s) and keep to tight deadlines within a pressurised environment with minimal supervision
  • Ability to produce, track and manage budgets
  • Ability to advise, train and develop staff and external parties where required in area of IP expertise
  • Understanding when to seek advice from Trade mark Counsel, Patent Counsel, Regional / Global managers, IP Commercial/Business Managers or foreign trade mark agents or lawyers
