As a forklift operator, you move materials from one place to another using special industrial tractors and trucks. You work in a warehouse, dockyard, factory, construction site or wherever products or equipment are stored on pallets or stacked on industrial shelving and need to be moved. Often, you’re called upon to work extended hours or shifts, as manufacturing and delivery of products is often a ‘round the clock’ operation.
You’re responsible for operating a forklift to move, locate, relocate, stack and count merchandise. You’re accountable for the safe and efficient operation of the equipment, before, during and after its use. You keep the work area clean and free from materials that may prove hazardous. It’s physically demanding work so it’s important to maintain your stamina by keeping yourself in good physical condition.
Generally, you’re required to have a high school diploma and usually require a minimum of 2-3 years of experience but occasionally may be willing to train a new employee who shows eagerness and aptitude.
