Job Description

  • Provide some field oversight of any remaining contractors’ geotechnical investigations.
  • Develop independent logs of selected excavations.
  • Check field data and assist with inspection of laboratory testing program.
  • Interpret field data from investigations obtained by the contractors.
  • Interpret instrumentation and monitoring data obtained by the contractors.
  • Design site investigation, assist in the procurement of contractors and provide oversight of the odour control facilities geotechnical investigation.
  • Assist STEP team with the development of any tender documents for the odour control facilities contract/s.
  • Review geotechnical aspects of the design build contractors’ design and method statement submittals
  • Assist STEP team with geotechnical related UPC claims
  • Provide other geotechnical support to the STEP team.
  • Responsibilities

  • Assist in the implementation of geotechnical investigations required for any further construction contracts (odour control facilities), manage field oversight and assist in the approvals and permitting for the investigations.
  • Verify and validate any field and laboratory data.
  • Review the Geotechnical Investigation Contractor prepared Geotechnical Data Reports.
  • Prepare any further Geotechnical Interpretive Reports required for the STEP programme components.
  • Manage any geotechnical staff assigned to the STEP team
  • Provide the STEP Team with any geotechnical advice and prepare memoranda or reports as required
  • Provide the STEP Team with any technical assistance on geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring
  • Manage the oversight of the STEP contractors geotechnical investigations and ensure compliance with the contract
  • Monitor the contractors’ compliance with geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring requirements
  • Attend monitoring meeting with STEP contractors where requested by the Resident Engineers and maintain an overview on the monitoring data across the contracts
  • Provide technical reviews on the contractors’ design submittals in a timely manner
  • Provide technical reviews on relevant contractors’ method statements in a timely manner
  • Manage responses to contractors’ geotechnical related RFIs
  • Assist the STEP Contracts Manager with advice on any geotechnical related claims
  • Make frequent inspections of the major excavations and manage independent logging of these excavations
  • In conjunction with the STEP Resident Engineers teams, monitor compliance of contractors’ methods of face logging and determining methods of ground support
  • Maintain geotechnical records for the STEP contracts
  • Give geotechnical presentations to the Employer’s organisation as required
  • Requirements

    The ideal candidate has worked in the capacity of a senior or lead geotechnical engineer or geotechnical resident engineer for a consulting engineer or as a geotechnical engineer for a contractor on major tunnelling programmes involving large diameter shafts, pipe jacking, microtunnelling with pressurized face MTBMs.

  • Education: Master’s degree in a geotechnical-related field preferred – mining degrees considered. Prefer Chartered Engineer (UK), PE (USA) or equivalent professional qualification/membership.
  • General Experience: Minimum 15 years related experience in geotechnical works, with particular experience in shaft construction, pipe jacking and microtunnelling. Minimum five years experience as a geotechnical lead.

  • Specific Experience Desired: 

  • Demonstrated success in the geotechnical management or providing geotechnical expertise on large underground contracts.
  • Specific experience of working with pressurized face MTBMs on soft ground tunnelling works.
  • Specific experience of working with shaft construction by sheet piling, caissons, secant piling and SCL works.
  • Specific experience of working with pipe jacking and microtunnelling works
  • Good general geotechnical experience on heavy civil engineering projects.
  • Some tunnel design experience preferred.
  • Good knowledge of unforeseen ground condition claims for underground works.
  • Computer literate – proficient in MS Office.
  • Articulate and can present clearly and professionally to experts in underground works and novices alike.
  • Competent at writing – can present views clearly and concisely in good written English.
  • Culturally aware - used to handling a multi-cultural, multi-religious staff.
  • Good team player with high energy levels.
