Job Description

Job Summary:

This is skilled work at the basic/intermediary level in the maintenance and repair of heavy construction equipment.

Work involves performance of varied repairs of all types of diesel powered heavy construction equipment. Work also includes repairing of automotive gasoline powered equipment. Although work is normally performed under general supervision of a foreman, employees must employ independent judgement and resourcefulness in performing mechanical repair work, especially when repairs are made in the field. Work is reviewed through the proper functioning and performance of equipment repaired.

Duties and Responsiblities

* Inspects, repairs, and adjusts graders, scrapers, trenching machines, pans, backhoe, diesel tractors, hydraulic and cable operated attachments, and earth moving bulldozers.

* Overhauls, adjust, and tunes diesel and gasoline engines; grinds valves; overhauls transmissions.

* Repairs and replaces pistons, crankshafts, bearings, clutches, and hydraulic drivers.

* Rebuilds and replaces tractor undercarriages; changes tracks, rollers, and frames.

* Repairs miscellaneous equipment such as welding machines, fork lifts, and chain saws.

Performs related work as required.

Education and Experience

Graduation at Diploma Level from a standard Vocational or Polytechnic Institution and some experience at the basic/intermediary level in the repair of heavy construction equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of heavy equipment mechanical work.

* Considerable knowledge of the operating and maintenance requirements of various types of heavy construction equipment.

* Some knowledge of the occupational hazards of the mechanical trades and of necessary safety precautions.

* Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

* Ability to locate and diagnose defects in diesel and gas powered equipment.

* Skill in the use of tools and equipment and their care in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.
