Job Description

Position reports to:

Chief Electrical Engineer

Primary objective

  • Leading the electrical design for the assigned project interacting with other disciplines, client and vendors as required.
  • Electrical transmission & distribution system design for the assigned project(s) interacting with other disciplines, client and vendors as required.
  • Responsibilities

  • Development of Overhead Line (OHL) route drawings
  • OHL conductor sizing, sag tension calculations, transmission tower selection, spacing etc. for voltage levels 11/33/66/132/220 kV
  • Development of Outdoor Substation (Switchyard) and Indoor (both GIS and AIS) Substation Equipment layouts for voltage levels 11/33/66/132/220 kV
  • Development of load lists, electrical equipment list
  • Development of electrical power transmission & distribution concepts, operation philosophies, SLDs, Protection Block logics, Control & Schematic diagrams etc
  • Development of other electrical layouts such as cabling, earthing, lighting & lightning protection
  • Development of engineering man hour estimates
  • Development of project cost estimates
  • Power system analysis - load flow, short circuit, stability using software such as EDSA, ETAP
  • Electrical design calculations - voltage drop, equipment sizing, lighting, earthing, cable sizing etc
  • Electrical protection and relay selection, setting, coordination.
  • Site survey and data collection for electrical design
  • Specifications and data sheets for electrical equipment
  • Material Requisitions for electrical equipment
  • Technical bid evaluation
  • Purchase Requisitions for electrical equipment
  • Vendor drawing review
  • Factory inspection and testing of electrical equipment
  • Ensure work is carried-out competently and effectively, within time and budget constraints, and that project objectives are satisfied
  • Overall supervision of electrical engineers, designers and technical personnel in the execution of the project and the development of project electrical deliverables
  • Identify and review new technologies development which may provide more efficient and cost effective solutions
  • Manage design change within project budget and schedule framework
  • Prepare electrical progress and expenditure reports on a project specific basis
  • Manage project discipline resource requirements
  • Effective interaction with client engineering team for approval of design deliverables
  • Participation in design reviews, value engineering workshops etc
  • Good understanding of HSE requirements of both self and within the discipline team
  • Ensuring technical integrity of the electrical deliverables for the project. In particular ensure compliance with the work scope and with applicable international standards.
  • Specific accountabilities

  • Ability to function independently within a team environment.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with other disciplines for inter-disciplinary interaction.
  • Ability to co-ordinate with other agencies such as client, vendors and contractor as required.
  • Quality Assurance – Responsible for self and the discipline project team working within the provisions and guidelines of the company Quality Assurance system.
  • Promote and facilitate HSE awareness within the discipline project team
  • Requirements



  • 12 years experience in engineering design in engineering consultancy organisations
  • 3 years of experience in the design of transmission & distribution projects
  • Design of HV and EHV systems
  • Excellent computer skills with MS Excel, MS Word, MS Access,
  • Reporting, estimating and supervision skills

  • Desirable

  • Experience with power system analysis and modelling systems using EDSA or ETAP

  • Matching indicators


  • Graduate Degree in Electrical Engineering with Power Systems as one of the core subjects

  • Desirable

  • PG Degree in Power Systems
  • Extensive work experience at a senior level in the T & D sector
