Job Description

Mechanical Design Engineer, Scotland

We are currently seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to work on a project site in Scotland. This position would best suit an experienced senior engineer. The role is based within the current team of 16 and growing in Dounreay working on various nuclear decommissioning projects. Responsible for mechanical engineering design work packages (including aspects of nuclear HVAC, building services, steam systems and vessels/pipework design).


The principal function of this position is to design from feasibility, through concept and into detailed design of mechanical components for any given decommissioning project. The principal duties will be:

to develop concept design through to detailed design and manufacture
to work with CAD technicians to produce detailed design drawings
to produce detailed P&ID’s, P&E schedules & Engineering Specifications
to produce contract documentation
to comply with nuclear industry and site specific protocols and methodologies
to interface with others in an integrated project team environment
to build relationships with stakeholders in the supply chain

The key areas of responsibility include:

Mechanical plant and equipment sizing utilising engineering principals
Equipment layouts based on process requirements and dimensional constraints.
Engineering calculations
Overseeing junior staff within the project team.
Overseeing build and commissioning of designs.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum would be HND degree qualified in a relevant discipline; however a BSc or BEng is more suited to the role and the level of this position

The ideal candidate should possess and be able to demonstrate the following skills and knowledge. These points should align with the key areas of responsibility:

Knowledge of mechanical services design principles
Knowledge of PID drawing design and 3-D design packages (e.g. Inventor)
Organised and systematic
Good team player with an ‘easy to get on with’ personality
Willingness to work flexible hours to meet peaks and troughs in work load
Experience of the nuclear industry would be beneficial but is not essential. You must be willing to travel and live away from home Monday – Friday. Travel and accommodation will be provided in addition to the benefits.
