Job Description

Job Summary:

Incumbents manage all costs relating to the building and civil engineering projects of the Company, from the initial calculations to the final figures. They seek to minimize the costs of a project and enhance value for money, while still achieving the required standards and quality. Many of these are specified by statutory building regulations, which the surveyor needs to understand and adhere to.

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Preparing tender and contract documents, including bills of quantities with the architect and/or the client;

* Undertaking cost analysis for repair and maintenance of project work;
assisting in establishing the client’s requirements and undertaking feasibility studies;

* Performing risk and value management and cost control; advising on procurement strategy; identifying, analyzing and developing responses to commercial risks;

* Preparing and analyzing costings for tenders; allocating work to subcontractors; providing advice on contractual claims; analyzing outcomes and writing detailed progress reports;

* Valuing completed work and arranging payments;

* Maintaining awareness of the different building contracts in current use;

* Understanding the implications of health and safety regulations.


* As they would need negotiate with all kinds of people, from site workers to directors, professionally and fairly they will need to be able to express themselves well, both when speaking and in writing. They also have to work well in a team.

* They will need to be able to read architectural drawings and have an appreciation of construction processes, along with excellent numerical and IT skills.

* They will also have to get their head around building law and regulations, as well as health and safety matters, tax and insurance and contract law, so that they should understand the legal implications of any decision made.

* They are expected to have a broad range of building, managerial and communication skills, along with sound commercial awareness.

* They will need enthusiasm and leadership potential, since they’ll probably be managing sub-contractors, and be able to think in an innovative way.

* They must be practical minded people who approach problem solving in a methodical and logical way.

* They must have at least 5 years experience in the Quantity Surveying Industry.

Education and Qualifications:

* HND or Bachelors Degree in Quantity Surveying or related field.

* Any Commercial Certification or Membership would be an added advantage.
