Job Description

The client is a leading retailer of School wears and accessories, supplying high and mid-end private primary & secondary Schools. The company has retail shops in Lagos and Abuja and delivers in wholesale quantities directly to various customers across Nigeria.

In line with its current business needs, the company is looking to hire an accountant. We are interested in an individual with an accounting background and experience but also open to making a career transition into more strategic financial functions or a financial analyst/expert with accounting knowledge and experience.


  1. In charge of developing and implementing accounting policies and procedures for the company including having a firm grip of the company’s accounting software
  2. Manage internal control for wholesale transactions at the head office
  3. Manage tax and related procedures including:
    1. Preparation of documents for tax remittances
    2. Processing payments with Federal and state tax authorities
    3. Processing of employees’ tax clearance
    4. Liaising with company clients on withholding tax receipts
  4. Prepare management accounts and other documents necessary for auditors and will liaise with same during the company’s auditing process    
  5. Budget for and approve petty cash expenses; processing and disbursing of payments – writing cheques; and monitoring the company’s bank balances
  6. Act as an accounting expert for management and will liaise with the bank to obtain concessions where and when necessary
  7. Engage in bank reconciliation process with other accounting personnel   
  8. Ensure all regulatory and compliance matters are strictly adhered to and followed through – keeping up to date with new policies
  9. Manage POS related transactions, remittances and updating of all company accounting records, while identifying and resolving all accounting issues where necessary

10.  Contribute to the strategic planning and direction of the Company by making commercial and financial inputs both strategic and operational as a member of the Management Team

11.  Be involved in implementing all financial aspects of the strategic plan and achieving relevant objectives

12.  Help manage and maintain, in close working relationship with the Chief Executive Officer, the business planning and budgetary process including budgets, capital expenditure, budget monitoring and reforecasts (financial models)

13.  Ensure that the company has effective financial systems, controls and processes in place and that these are used throughout the company

14.  Review financial targets and performance levels, proposing action plans to generate additional revenues/profit and rectify shortfalls

15.  Provide the Management team with accurate, up to date management information both individualised and comparative as to the performance, in financial terms, of the Company’s different products and services, other departments and locations – Lagos and Abuja

16.  Develop a strong commercial insight into and understanding of key clients and suppliers 


The ideal candidate should:

-          Have between 5 – 7 years’ experience

-          Should have a background in accounting and finance (or already developing interest and capacity in finance)

-          Have very good interpersonal skills

-          Possess excellent oral and written communication skills

-          Be a chartered accountant (if primarily an accountant)

-          Have audit experience (added advantage)

-          Have experience working in a retail company (an added advantage)
