Job Description

Role Overview

With a responsibility for a large variety of complex legal matters your role will be to contribute to the business goals of Siemens and to protect the Company's reputation for integrity through:
- showing effective Leadership (focus on operative topics), e.g. by
    - exploiting the opportunities law provides
    - taking the initiative and contributing proactively to master the challenges the business faces
    - taking decisions in legal matters and assuming responsibility for them (e.g. anticipating/managing risks)
    - thinking and acting entrepreneurially (e.g. in balancing governance and business needs)
- Counseling as a trusted advisor for all legal matters


What are my responsibilities?

Ensuring effective legal risk management (operational focus)
Address legal risks and opportunities by:
- proactively identifying them and bringing them together with a proposal for the solution to the attention of the business partner
- applying entrepreneurial and legal view point in order to mitigate risks and to realize opportunities which otherwise may have been missed

To be a counseling Business Partner
Regarding a broad field of legal topics by:
- providing excellent advice in broad variety of legal areas (such as procurement, sales & distribution, IP/Technology Transfer, Litigation, M&A) in a timely fashion
- bringing in specialists where appropriate
- taking into consideration the specific business environment and interests as well as governance needs
- assuming responsibility in order to enable the business to meet its objectives 

Mentoring and supervision
Mentoring and supervision of paralegals, Commercial Lawyers, Contract Managers, trainees and team assistants in order to support their professional development and to develop and enhance quality of work

 Managing legal proceedings
Managing legal proceedings by
- gathering facts
- analyzing legal situation
- setting up strategy
- bringing in specialists if required
- liaising with external lawyers
- effectively managing costs in order to mitigate risks and exploit opportunities

Managing claims
Managing claims both offensive and defensive by analyzing the contract and setting up the strategy in order to optimize the business position.

Effective legal control of agreements and tenders

Effective legal control of agreements and tenders by:
- drafting, reviewing and negotiating all types of agreements
- taking responsibility for Limit of Authority legal risk assessment (if applicable) in order to protect good opportunities and to identify and mitigate business risks

Internal knowledge sharing and training
Share legal knowledge within Legal Department and provide training to Business Partner by providing up-to-date knowledge tool, training materials and sessions  in order to maximize the benefit of best in class legal community and proactively influence Business Partner's behavior to identify business opportunities and minimize risks.

File reports on material legal risks and proceedings by
- collecting, summarizing and updating data
- using IT-Tools and experience in risk evaluation
in order to meet the requirements of SEC, auditors, audit committee as well as capital market regulations and to inform on relevant data and risks

Manage outside counsel
Manage outside counsel by:
- selecting and retaining them
- clearly instructing and supervising them
- taking decisions in consultation with the external lawyers
- managing costs (e.g. create proper budget, agree on fixed fees, caps, rates, negotiate rebates, check invoices)
in order to achieve cost efficiency and high value and timely legal advice


What do I need to qualify for this job?

  • Fully educated lawyer with excellent academic background.
  • At least 4-5 years of experience at a well respected law firm or in the legal department of a multinational company in either case with sound experience in corporate-commercial matters, especially tender projects
  • Well versed in construction law, FIDIC etc
  • At least 2 years of experience in major projects or transactions that involve a high degree of complexity and difficulty.
  • Excellent negotiation and presentation skills
  • Experience of risk identification and management
  • Knowledge of finance and tax principles
  • You will also need to have demonstrated a high level of intercultural communication skills and business ethics in previous roles
