Job Description

The HES Department of Chevron's Energy Technology Company (ETC) is seeking applications for a Senior Process Safety Engineer in ETC's Global Technology Centers (GTC). This position will provide support in process safety for Chevron's regional operating companies, projects and joint ventures, both upstream and downstream. The position will assist regional operating companies in the implementation, monitoring and sustaining of process safety management and safety case management. The position will also involve the application of the Company's risk management process (RiskMan2), with an emphasis on qualitative risk assessment techniques. Key services include expert consulting on process safety, applying process safety principles during capital project execution, supporting existing facilities in applying risk management techniques, and developing and delivering training programs for various aspects of process safety. 

The HES Department provides technology research & development and technical services to nearly all of Chevron's operating companies (OPCOs) and business units (BUs). It is staffed by a group of approximately 200 professionals delivering leading edge technology and practical, cost effective solutions in Environmental, Operations, Safety, and Health & Product Stewardship.

The position includes regular foreign travel (up to 40% of time and sometimes including weekends) within the region, and occasional travel outside the region.


  • Provide strategic and tactical guidance in the application of process safety management and safety case development consistent with Corporate direction and requirements. Perform audits of various elements of process safety for operating facilities and capital projects. Audit activities may be performed individually or in conjunction with Corporate Operational Excellence Audit program.
  • Develop and deliver various aspects of process safety, including Process Hazard Analysis facilitation, Incident Investigation, Managing Safe Work, and Technical Aspects of Process Safety.
  • Provide consultation to OPCO engineers, project teams and other personnel in implementing practical solutions to their unique process safety and safety case challenges.
  • Assist in development of company guidance on regulations, laws, and industry standards related to Process Safety, and participate in government and regulatory activities as appropriate.
  • Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree or higher (or equivalent) in Chemical, Mechanical Engineering, or Engineering Science (Physics, Mathematics).
  • Likely 5+ years of experience in an operating facility, or equivalent, with experience in one or more of the following disciplines: Process Engineering, Capital Project Management, Safe Operations, Process Safety Management, or Risk Assessment.
  • Organization and multi-tasking skills to juggle and meet several customers' needs at once. Ability to work independently
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including: group presentation, facilitation, and training skills.
  • Training and application experience in qualitative risk assessment techniques (hazard and operability studies – HAZOPs) 
  • Analytical/problem-solving skills to develop cost-effective solutions. 
  • Sound understanding of the engineering principles of underlying process plant designs and operation.
