Job Summary

The purpose of the role is to lead an Advanced Process Control (APC) project team that implements Multivariable Model Based Predictive Control and Optimization projects along with customised complex and/or standard engineering solutions to successful completion and within budgeted time and cost constraints. To support the APC implementation of projects in line with objectives including continuous improvement of margin, customer satisfaction, schedule, working capital and safety performance.  

Job Responsibilites

  • Act as technical interface with customers, establishing professional relationships to ensure that the project requirements are fully defined and agreed
  • Use of negotiation skills to assist project team in managing technical scope with customer
  • Ensure that the engineered solution meets project requirements in terms of functionality, standards, quality, and supporting documentation and implementation process at minimum cost by allocating work assignments to project team
  • Monitor and control assigned work scope against the project plan, ensure effective change control and identifies risks / opportunities
  • Actively contribute in the pre-engineering phase of a project. Such as identifiy to the customer which information is required before project starts
  • Assist sales organisation in seeking project and business opportunities, defining and estimating the engineering/technical scope of work, proposal preparation, manhour estimates, and sales presentations
  • Provide technical guidance and supervision to project engineers, ensure that work assignments are executed to appropriate standards and quality systems (Implementation, Test & Documentation)
  • Lead/perform the activities of client requirements analysing, specifying, designing, deve­loping, testing, documenting, installing, and commissioning advanced control applications using Profit Controller/Optimizer, UniSim, DCS algorithms, and custom programs
  • Lead/perform PID tuning, step testing, model identification, inferential models developing, on-line commissioning, tuning of control applications and complex control problems
  • Lead/perform maintenance and troubleshooting of on-line control applications
  • Lead/perform economic benefit/feasibility studies
  • Pro-actively seek technology improvements and project methodology improvements
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical problems that arise during project execution
  • Train customer engineers and operators on control applications
  • Communicate to Project Manager in terms of project progress and issues

Job Requirements


  • Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering
  • More than 8 years of relevant experience in designing/implementing multivariable model predictive control technology and online optimization such as Profit Controller/Optimizer, DMCPlus and EXASMOC
  • Experience in refinery/petrochemical/chemical processes and equipment
  • Experience with Distributed Control Systems and Plant Logic
  • Experience with interfacing APC on various DCS systems
  • Able to drive/lead a team and capable of interfacing with a wide range of personalities
  • Good Knowledge of process control and tuning
  • Knowledge of computing software, operating systems (e.g. Microsoft Windows) and systems network
  • Knowledge of Distributed Control System would be advantageous
  • Good overall plant process and operations knowledge
  • Solid analytical/problem solving skills and technical skills with a high level of attention to detail
